A Market, or a Niche?

Definitions

Market: A place where goods are offered for sale.

Niche: A special area of demand for a product or service, a subset of a market.

First let me explain that you really don’t want to promote to an entire market. To give you an example, Golf is a market, but as you will soon come to realize, to try to promote to the golf market as a whole (or without targeting a smaller section of the market) would be costly and impractical, the competition is far too intense and your marketing efforts would be lost in the huge volume of existing information.

However, if you aim your marketing efforts, for example, at one-legged, left handed golfers, prepare good information, tips and strategies, you have a much better chance to be able to a) locate your intended customers, b) provide them with useful information and c) make a successful income from your efforts. No disrespect is intended to one-legged, left handed golfers.

So in short, you need to focus on finding a niche within a market that interests you. It is important to select something that interests you, because you will need to become something of an expert in your chosen niche.

Don’t let the “expert” part put you off for the moment, it’s not difficult to become an expert and it doesn’t take very long. If your niche is sufficiently focused and you have a reasonable level of interest, with a bit of time and effort you can achieve expert status in little more than a week.

How you go about this comes under the heading of Niche Research and it is absolutely key to your online efforts. It can be the difference between making small change and an online income that is truly life changing. I will be explaining this in detail very soon.

Understanding and Avoiding the Latest “Not To Be Missed” Offer

Internet Marketing can seem like a huge, very steep learning curve and in some ways it is, in the beginning you can expect to feel a bit overwhelmed by all the information coming at you, a suggestion, if you do feel overwhelmed, don’t sign up to too many mailing lists, because even now, I sometimes get the feeling that I “should” read all the emails I am sent, on the basis: “if I don’t I may miss something important”.

Don’t be fooled by feelings such as this, the term “there is nothing new under the Sun” is generally quite accurate. Most new and astounding breakthroughs are generally a re-write of an earlier principle and while the principles are generally sound, a) the information is usually available elsewhere and b) even if that particular information isn’t, give it a few months and the astounding offer that is: “soon to increase in price forever”, will probably come down in price once the initial buzz has finished. There are very few products out there that can maintain their buzz past the initial launch frenzy.

Let me give you an example. a couple of years ago, a very successful marketer called Mike Filsaime (Google him if you want to find out more), launched a program called Butterfly Marketing, it was a high ticket (expensive) physical product (sent to you by post, rather than downloaded). At the time of writing Butterfly Marketing still sells for $1497 – here is a link to the sales page) that coaches a very effective product launch technique using viral marketing techniques, the product consists of an ebook called the “Butterfly Marketing Manuscript”, several DVDs and printed reports, some software to automate website creation and many other things, such as DVD interviews of many top name marketers and access to a private forum which provides support from Mike’s team and others who have purchased the product.

There is no doubt that the information is sound.

It utilizes good marketing principles and gets the message across in a very effective way.

Interestingly, although the manuscript ebook mentioned above describes the entire blueprint for the technique and was valued at $297, very soon afterwards it was offered for sale on it’s own for $97 and despite threats of an imminent price increase, it is still available for $97 (here is a link to the sales page). Very recently – by recently I mean May 2008 – it has been offered as a free bonus when you sign up for Mike’s new monthly printed newsletter.

Now I am kicking myself, because I took the plunge when the Butterfly Marketing Manuscript was advertized for $97 and have since signed up for Mike’s newsletter, so I will receive my second copy, but this sort of thing happens and there was so much useful content that I don’t regret my purchase one bit!

As a final tip, be aware of the “this product will never be reduced in price” type of offer, it can mean a few things, a) the product describes a technique that will be out of date very quickly, rendering the advice useless, so grab it now and take advantage while you still can, b) the product simply isn’t very good, so once a few people have purchased it and reviewed it, there won’t be much point continuing to offer it for sale, or c) the sales page is lying and once the buzz is over the product will be offered for a reduced price.

I’m not condemning all such products, or techniques, only trying to make you aware of the underlying message in some of the very hyped up sales pages that you will encounter.

Internet Marketing Fundamentals

Assuming you are reading this because you have decided to make some money from Internet Marketing, let’s take a short while to discuss some home truths regarding this occupation.

To achieve success in a meaningful way, you need:

  1. A market. You need to decide on a market, or a section of a market, called a niche.
  2. A website. At it’s simplest, this can be a single page, or many thousands of pages, here size is truly unimportant, big or small is irrelevant as long as the website is an appropriate size to the subject matter.
  3. Traffic. Visitors to your website, if you think of this in terms of roads… with some careful work, your website can be positioned in the middle of a virtual freeway with loads and loads of visitors coming past, hundreds every day. The unfortunate truth is that unless you pay a great deal of money in advertising, you will find that to begin with at least, your website will be positioned at the end of a dusty track.
  4. A unique feature, in marketing speak this is known as your USP, or Unique Selling Proposition. What is it about your website that will get visitors to buy from you rather than someone else. This is an area that holds a great deal of trepidation for a great many new marketers.
  5. A list of subscribers. Whatever area of marketing you want to break into, be it on the internet, or in the real world, whether your area is golf, or making curtains, if you don’t build a list of interested customers, you begin each day as if you were opening a new store, entirely from scratch with no customers.
  6. A product. Whether this product is your own, or someone else’s, you need something to sell. There are alternatives, it is possible to make money while selling nothing at all, but we’ll cover that later, let’s keep it simple in the short term.

Ok, so there you have it, not a lot really!

Now for the good news, over the coming days, I plan to describe each of these areas in turn. Find you answers to some of the fundamental questions that you will be asking and basically see if I can get you to earn your first dollars online.
